Brain Science and Meditation

Meditation is a great way in relieving stress, improving relaxation and increasing focus. Meditation also improves patients with Alzheimer's disease and those who suffered from stroke. Brain physiology during meditation may have brought these positive benefits to the patients.

The region recognized to control spatial orientation which is found on the left posterior parietal lobe, was deactivated during meditation. Consistent with this result, the participants testify a state of detachment and transcendence. They also said they had an increase capacity for concentration and sense of focus. This may mean that it is the act of focusing and not necessarily the meditating that improves one's attention. Heightened activity in areas connected with memory and language have also been taken into account while happiness and sense of well being have been reportedly linked with the deactivation of subgenual cingulated gyrus - a region in the brain.

Neurologists have said there are 2 orientation systems in our brain. The right one contains neurons that deal with sensory input about the directions and distance so we could move around safely. The system located on the left side connects us with different reality. The neurons in our body define the boundaries of each different system and our relation to the space around us.

Experiment showed that individuals who have gone through a meditation - after finding some quiet time and finding their inner spirituality - found an intense change in their posterior superior parietal lobe found in the left orientation area.

The brain is an electrochemical machine that uses electrochemical energy for it to function. Brainwaves display the electrical activity that emanates in the brain. It ranges from high amplitude, low frequency delta to the low amplitude, high frequency data. The brainwaves alter during meditation.

  • BETA. Normal alert consciousness, awake
  • ALPHA. Lucid, calm, not thinking, relaxed
  • THETA. Mental imagery, deep relaxation and meditation
  • DELTA. Deep and Dreamless sleep

Beta Waves. Also known as beta rhythm is used to designate the frequency range of brain activity between 12 and 30 Hz or 12 to 30 transitions per cycle. It happens during awaking awareness, concentration, extroversion, active conversation and logical thinking.

Alpha Waves. It is also called as Berger's wave (from the founder of EEG). They are electromagnetic oscillations with the frequency range of 812 Hz developing from synchronous and coherent electrical activity of thalamic pacemaker cells of the human being. They put the brain in states of relaxation, non-arousal, hypnosis and meditation.

Theta Waves. This is an oscillatory pattern in EEG signals taken from either inside of the brain or from electrodes glued to the scalp. They happens during daydreaming, meditation, dreaming, paranormal phenomena, dreaming, ESP, out of body experience and shamanic journeys.

An individual driving in a highway and discovers that he cannot remember the last five miles in the state of theta waves. This is brought about driving in the freeway. This also often occurs during shower or bathing or while brushing your hair. This happens when a task is automatic that you can mentally disengage from them. The events that happen while in theta state is often free flow and occur without guilt or censorship. This is considered a positive mental state.

Delta Waves. These are high amplitude brain waves with a frequency pattern of oscillation between 04Hz. Like other brain waves, delta waves are recorded with an EEG or electroencephalogram. These are usually associated with deep sleep. This aids to characterize the depth of your sleep.

The left prefrontal complex increases activity during meditation. The changes are constant overtime. The effect remains if you stop meditating for a while.

The areas within the bran are being activated while meditating. Scientists are using new technologies to see exactly what goes inside the brains of people who meditate whether regularly or intensively. Neuroscientists believed that regular meditation changes the way the brain is wired. They also believed that these changes could be the reason that meditation can improve well being and health.

More than a thousand scientific articles have been written on the subject of meditation. Until recently, they only observe the correlations of meditating and improved mood or decreased illnesses. But with many scientists and consumers that believe in meditation, researches move beyond simply showing that meditation can actually influence the brain to showing exactly how to accomplish the so-called influence of meditation.
